Farewell 2017, Hello 2018

Wow! What a year! We had our Spring Technical Seminar with Kagawa Shihan, followed by our Annual Open Championships in April, and, we welcomed 2 new clubs to JKS Ireland - Saggart SKC and Ballybay & Culloville SKC. It has been great working with you so far. Oss! Summer saw our Technical Seminar with Dermot Sensei followed by a visit from Okamoto Sensei. Squad training continued throughout the summer and our Squad travelled to Belgium to compete in the 2017 JKS Euro Continental Cup. The Tri-colour 🇮🇪️made the podium on more than one occasion! Great work Martin Sensei & Squad – you did us all proud! ☘️ We were only just back then, and two JKS Ireland members were off again, this time to the 10th WKF World Championship (Juniors, Cadets, & Under 21s) in Tenerife, Spain. Well done Geri Friel (Strabane SKC) & Ali OKeeffe (Swords Karate) for making the 🇮🇪️Karate Ireland (ONAKAI) National Squad! Our Autumn Seminar was with Kanayama Sensei – boy his sessions were to...

Members of the JKS Ireland Squad gathered this morning in Hokubu Dojo, Swords for their final Squad Session before departing for the JKS 5th Continental Cup in Belgium in two weeks’ time.

For the first half of the session, Squad members covered a selection of kata, focusing on finer competition details in preparation for the upcoming tournament.

An energetic kumite session followed and Squad members pushed hard in their training as they focussed on attention to detail in scoring techniques, speed and kime.

There was a heightened buzz at the session this morning as anticipation builds for the event and Dermot Sensei concluded the session with some calming sage advice about participation at an international event.  This was welcomed by all, and particularly by members who are participating at this level for the first time.

The Squad will fly out to Belgium on 1st of September, and will compete in team events on the 2nd and individual events on the 3rd.  We wish them the very best of luck.  O...

Karateka from JKS Ireland Clubs nationwide descended on Swords, Dublin last Sunday for National Squad Training and the highly anticipated Squad Selection to represent Ireland at the European Karate Championships in Belgium.  The Championships will take place in Hasselt on the 1st, 2nd & 3rd of September.

It was a tough training session over 2.5 hours, which saw the participants cover key elements for competition in Kata as well as Kumite.  Dermot O'Keeffe Sensei, Chief Instructor of Swords Karate Club & Head of JKS Karate in Ireland coached Kata through the first half of the morning and imparted valuable guidance to the attendees from his own experiences as a several time World & European Champion.

Martin McNamee Sensei, Chief Instructor of 3 Rivers Karate Club, Lifford, coached Kumite in the latter half of the session and continued his energetic and challenging workouts that have become much loved by all the Squad! Martin Sensei has a huge wealth of coaching at Compe...

There was an excellent turnout for Squad training today.  Martin Sensei took the participants through an intense workout aimed at developing Team Spirit as well as techniques.

Over a two hour session, participants worked with different partners to develop their skills, speed, reflexes and friendships.  And, as usual, Martin Sensei was on hand with sound words of advice and encouragement while pushing each member to reach their full potential.

For the last half hour, in a series of kumite matches, Declan Sensei gave an excellent explanation of the elements that lead to good scores in kumite matches.  The Squad learnt some very useful and helpful tips today from Declan Sensei's experience as a Referee.

Issue 1/2017 of the Irish Fighter magazine is out now and we are very proud to say JKS Ireland has the cover story.

Inside, the article is a biography of our Technical Director, Dermot O'Keeffe Sensei 6th Dan JKS and traces his journey in karate from age 16 in Coolock, Dublin to Technical Director of the JKS in Ireland. It is a frank and at times humorous piece that gives an insight into Dermot Sensei's personal karate journey.

Also featured in this edition is a report of our recent excellent seminar with Arimoto Sensei, one of the up-and-coming JKS Japan instructors.

This edition showcases a new format for the Irish Fighter, bringing all the Irish martial arts news together in a clean & crisp publication. Congratulations to the Editor, Rob Corwell on the very stylish new look.

JKS Ireland members can arrange to get a copy by emailing the JKS Ireland Secretary at secretaryjksireland@gmail.com

Alternatively,  you can pick up a copy from all good newsagents.

Martin McNamee Sensei of 3 Rivers Shotokan Karate Club delivered a high octane training session for the JKS Ireland Squad today, in preparation for the JKS European Championship which will be held in Belgium this year.

Through a variety of drills, Martin Sensei inspired the squad with many supportive comments, among them "Don't give up!" and "Keep going!".

With high energy music in the background, the squad covered Speed drills, Cardio drills, and Strength & Conditioning drills over the 2.5 hours to prepare for the big event in September.

It was a tough session but Martin Sensei encouraged everyone to do the best they could, telling them it will be worth it in the end.
